Goodreads SummarySerafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled-powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six.
Serafina believes her talisman was buried with an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar. . . . The pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating.

Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world. But they find her story outlandish; a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of fearsome razormouth dragons.

As they hunt for their talismans, both Serafina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn't know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave.

Rating

*This review contains spoilers for the first three books in the series.

This is book 2 in the Waterfire Saga series. We join Serafina and her friends in a search for the six talismans belonging to the original six mages. Serafina discovers her feelings for the mermaid Blu, a member of the Praedatori are warranted because he is Mahdi in disguise! She teams up with him to lead the Black Fin resistance, where we are introduced to the cute little character of a girl mermaid, Coco.

I only gave book one, Deep Blue, 2.5 stars because of the jarring way the POVs were handled. This book developed the storyline better and the different POVs transitioned more smoothly. We still only focus mainly on Serafina and Neela, which is disappointing (but SPOILER – book three, Dark Tide, lets us in on all the other girls and their journeys.)

Mahdi must risk his life to go undercover:
“There are things in this world worse than death” -Mahdi to Sera, pg 252

I love how much Serafina grows in this book:
“Serafina’s back was straight, her head was high. There was a dangerous new light in her eyes.” -pg 294

You do not see the ending coming. Ling gets captured by Rafe Laoro Mfeme and if you rearrange his name, you’ll discover who this villain truly is!

Overall, this was a good second book and I do recommend going on to book three. The fourth book, Sea Spell, is due out June 14th next year.
